1994 - 1994 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) English Channel and North Sea Plankton Survey - RV Cirolana 01/94
This survey was carried out in January 1994 in the Eastern English Channel and Southern North Sea to study the transport, feeding and condition of herring larvae. Plankton samples were collected at each site on the survey grid. This data consists of the numbers of herring larvae and other zooplankton, along with associated positional data and volumes filtered.

A fine mesh (35 micron) auxiliary net was fitted to the 76cm plankton sampler and was used to take 31 samples for analysis of potential food organisms for herring larvae - the sampler was later lost on 9th January so future samples were taken using the dual Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder system (270/20 micron aperture mesh) A Focus Instruments Optical Plankton Counter was fitted on the Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder body in place of the fine mesh sampling system for trials and was also fitted with the coarse mesh system for comparison for sampling in the herring larvae patches. Data storage: The raw data were stored on an Access database. The various data files were stored on the database in a series of tables linked by having the content of certain fields in common. All routine calculations, calibration changes and conversions were carried out on the database. The data tables (but not queries) have now been extracted into text files. Plankton data are normally expressed as either number of organisms per m3 or per m2. The number per m3 is obtained by dividing the numbers per sample by the volume filtered, calculated from the sampler flowmeters. Number per m2 is obtained by multiplying the number per m3 by the mean sampled depth during a deployment.
