2014 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) biological analyses of Marine Scotland Science (MSS) Cruden Bay (Aberdeenshire coast) benthic camera survey
The main aim of this investigation at Cruden Bay (Peterhead) was to improve knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of the benthic species and habitats of recognized conservation importance. This site was selected for survey as it is a proposed renewable energy location. A drop-down video survey of benthic habitats was undertaken by MSS at 6 sites from the 16th July 2014 on board the MSS vessel MRV Alba na Mara (cruise 1214A). SNH analysis of this seabed video and still photographic imagery is used to describe the nature of the seabed in terms of the physical structure and the species assemblages. Runs and run segments were assessed for the presence of protected features and other PMFs, as well as for the presence of species and habitats of recognised conservation importance.

This subtidal seabed data from Cruden Bay, off the Aberdeenshire coast (Peterhead) was collected during a research cruise by MSS on board the MRV Alba na Mara (cruise 0614A) between the 16th July 2014. This data were collected as part of a survey carried out at a number of proposed renewable energy locations, including Armadale on the north Scottish coast and at a number of North Sea locations in the Moray Firth and off Fraserbourgh and Kincardine (Aberdeen). Video images were obtained from 6 drop-down video drifts. Track position and depth data were displayed on a SD video overlay system. HD video footage was recorded at a resolution of 1920x1080. The camera frame also carried a vertically orientated digital stills camera which took photographs of the seabed at intervals, and a laser scaling system. This dataset were derived from biological analyses of MSS video footage undertaken by SNH contractor Dr Colin Moore. The purpose of this video footage analyses was to describe the physical structure and species assemblages present. Species present were identified and quantified using the semi-quantitative MNCR SACFOR scale, as far as possible. Biotopes were allocated based on the biological and physical attributes. Where the video run traversed a sequence of biotopes, the run is split into corresponding segments with the transition points recorded using the time, position and depth.
