Abstract

To identify and map spawning aggregations of cod in the eastern English Channel and to tag the mature, spawning fish within these aggregations by conventional means. In addition, biological sampling was undertaken to complement assessment of the aggregations.

Lineage

The survey was designed to allow the maximum number of mature cod (>50 cm long, based on maturity ogives derived from International Bottom Trawl Survey (ICES, 2005) data collected between 1977 and 2005) to be tagged by conventional means as well as allowing for the identification and mapping of possible spawning aggregations. In all, 12 days of sea time were intentionally split into 3 ‘blocks’ of time over a 3-month period (December 2006 – February 2007) to coincide with the spawning season of cod. The areas that were fished were initially based on local knowledge and experience of fishermen catching cod in a defined area between Beachy Head and Folkestone, within 10 miles of the coast. The nets were shot along transects, with the latitude and longitude of each net start and end being recorded.
