The purpose of this benthic survey in Loch Gairloch was to supplement the coverage in the area with photographs. The survey was designed to test gear during a MSS cruise and to collect some potentially useful data at the same time. Still photographs were taken at intervals along runs located within 7 areas in Loch Gairloch. Video was also collected along some of the runs, although it has not been analysed. The still photographs were taken by MSS between the 3rd and 8th March 2010 on board the vessel FRV Alba na Mara.

This subtidal seabed data from Loch Gairloch was collected by MSS between the 3rd and 8th March 2010. Still images were obtained from 12 runs using either a drop-down video camera system or a towed video system deployed approximately 1m above the seabed. A total of 667 still images were taken on the survey. Based on analysis of all photographs, the runs were split into segments of similar substrate and benthic community type. The physical and biological characteristics of each segment was recorded (where possible employing the SACFOR scale), biotopes allocated, and the presence of PMFs/MPA search features recorded. Analyses of the video footage was undertaken by Heriot-Watt University, contracted by SNH, to describe the physical structure and species assemblages present.
