Title

2012 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) Ulva, Danna and the McCormaig Isles (UDMI) SSSI intertidal site condition monitoring survey

Abstract

The main purpose of this intertidal survey of the Ulva, Danna and the McCormaig Isles SSSI, undertaken by Aquatic Survey and Monitoring Ltd. (ASML) for SNH on the 9th and 10th May 2012, were to provide sufficient information for site condition assessment. Intertidal sediment infauna and epibiota species abundance data and associated habitat descriptors were collected in-situ. Some baseline data were also collected for future SCM, including some infaunal core samples taken for laboratory analysis.

Lineage

This intertidal data from UDMI was collected during a survey run for SNH by ASML on the 9th and 10th May 2012. An in-situ survey methodology was used, based on the methodology developed in Wales as a basis for broadscale mapping and monitoring of large sediment features in marine SACs. This method required in-situ identification of key species and species groups, from both surface features and in sieved samples, and description of physical characteristics. This level of identification is thought to normally provide adequate data for identification of biotopes to level 4 or 5 of the national biotope classification and some semi-quantitative data for monitoring changes over time. To avoid bias to a particular area or feature and to complete surveying within short-timescales, the sediment survey locations were based on a pre-determined grid of stations. At each station a single 0.01m2 core sample was taken and sieved through a 1mm mesh sieve, photographs of the habitat and the core were recorded, visual inspection of a small representative sample of the sediment was undertaken with the aid of a grain-size comparator and notes were also made on the conspicuous epibiota and other features of the habitat within a 5m radius of the core sample position. At this SSSI site, the survey protocol also allowed for additional sampling in locations where the sediment community was found to be particularly diverse and potentially of notable conservation value. 5 0.01m2 core samples of sediments were taken at these additional locations for laboratory analysis of infauna and granulometry. Biological analysis of the infauna samples was carried out by ASML (Tom Mercer). Granulometry analyses on sediment samples was carried out by Hebog, Bangor. All analyses were carried out using standard laboratory methods and protocols.

Constraints related to access and use

Use constraints

Not to be used for navigation. Native oyster was recorded during survey. SNH Sensitive species policy regards instances of Native oyster (Ostrea edulis) species occurrences and instances of biotope Ostrea edulis beds on shallow sublittoral muddy mixed sediment (SS.SMx.IMx.Ost/ SS.IMX.Oy) as sensitive, as commercial fishing is threatening stocks. As such SNH would not release such records in response to an Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 request at a resolution below that provided by a 20km by 20km square. In such a case we would disguise the location by provision of data in GIS format and would replace the original location of the record with a square of 20km by 20km dimension placed around the precise location of the record(s). However, SNH may choose to share this data at full resolution with Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies and other trusted partners, academic researchers or developers for use in Environmental Statements at full resolution. However, such release would be strictly under the terms of a modified Open Government licence which would restrict published outputs and onward supply to the degraded resolution. Other species or biotope occurrences in this survey are not considered by SNH to be sensitive; as such these may be released at full resolution in response to requests covered by Environmental Information Regulations or Freedom of Information requests; additionally their re-use and dissemination is permissible under Open Government Licence terms. Any re-use of this data at whatever resolution will acknowledge the copyright owner.
