1975-1981 T.G. Skinner Solway Firth Occurrence of some prominent zooplankton

Abstract

Five surveys carried out by T.G. Skinner in the Solway Firth Areas. Surveys were carried out with plankton nets and a count of the species captured were carried out. This survey is the second survey: Winter Occurrence of Solway Hydromedusae (Glasg. Nat. 20 Part 5: 439-450 (1984)).

A 0.5m. diameter plankton net, mesh size 287 micron, was towed behind a rowing boat from the Rockcliffe shore to Rough Island and back, a total distance of about 1 km, with a total towing time of about 30 mins. Samples were taken once or twice a month and most were taken on spring tides, each tow usually being started within one hour of high water to ensure there was an adequate depth of water over the entire tow. All tows were horizontal, just below the surface. The catch was preserved at once in about 5% formalin and examined in detail later. Where the numbers of medusae were high the totals were estimated by subsampling 2.6% to 5.7% of the catch, using a 4mm. bore graduated tube, and all numbers were standardised for a 15 min. hauling time. Identifications were made with aid of Russell (1953, 1970) and Edwards (1964, 1966, 1972). Nomenclature is that of the Marine Biological Association (1957).
