Abstract

This dataset records Forest Research Experiment sites on the National Forest Estate and private land. Objective is to avoid accidental damage to Forest Research experiments and sample plots during Forest Enterprise operations and to provide Forest Enterprise Districts with contact details for experiments and sample plots so that they can enquire as to suitability of operations in surrounding forest. Data set was created as follows: 1. Fieldstations updated PlanOps with all known experiments/plots within their area, information included; experiment name, year tag, PL, Divisions and grid ref. 2. Fieldstation exported from Plan Ops and saved as a dbf file 3. Grid reference converted into X and Y co-ordinates. 4. TSU regional files collated by J Dutch into one file. 5. GB file converted into point theme using grid ref and splt by Fieldstation. 6. Based on this, fieldstations created new polygon experiment layer in ArcGIS based on point layer from MGIU. 7. Boundaries for each experiment digitised into the new shapefile, against a 1:10 000 OS backdrop and with ref to the FE SCDB. 8. Once both layers were created these were forwarded to MGIU to transfer attributes from points to polygons. 9. Requirement to add Project Leader resulted in complexity as this info had to be sourced from an alternative location 10. This almost complete dataset arrived at byy joinoing existing polygons to data containing Project Leader info. Some gaps/queries were referred back to TSU for final checks in Feb 2009
