FSP North Sea plaice and lemon sole
Three surveys of plaice and lemon sole on the fishing grounds off the NE coast of England and east coast of Scotland, using commercial twin-rig Scraper trawls. To examine the catch composition in this fishery, particularly the bycatch of cod. To compare the catches between 100mm and 120mm mesh cod-ends, especially in relation to the retention of lemon soles, and to compare the catches between various combinations of cod-end mesh and square-mesh-panels.

The main objective of the project was to quantify the catch of lemon sole and plaice and the associated by-catch, and to compare age and size compositions of target species and of cod over the three years 2004-2006 using the same type of vessel and trawl gear (twin-rig scraper trawl). The surveys in 2005 and 2006 used 100 mm codends throughout, whereas a mixture of mesh sizes was used in 2004.
