Title

2010 - 2010 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Selectivity of Gillnets used in the Cornish Red Mullet Fishery 2010/11 - Fisheries Science Partnership

Alternative title(s)

FSP Cornwall red mullet gill net fishery discard reduction

Abstract

To look at the capture of red mullet, and associated species, with different mesh sizes of gill nets. A range of nets will be used, within the range 50-80mm, made up into identical fleets to help determine the desirable net size to reduce the number of discards.

Lineage

The desire for this selectivity study arose from a meeting of inshore fishers convened in November 2009 by the Newlyn office of the Marine and Fisheries Agency (now the Marine Management Organisation). Attention had been drawn to large catches of ‘non-target’ species and juvenile fish by gillnets intended mainly for catching red mullet, a high-value species generally found by inshore fishers at the edge of rough ground in concentrations peaking towards the end of the summer. Towed gears also catch significant quantities of red mullet in deeper water of the western English Channel at other times of the year.
