Within the Rivers Stour and Orwell, Eastern IFCA (and its predecessor, ESFJC) first mapped the extent of the Peacock Fan Worm (Sabella pavonina) in 2003 using Roxann Acoustic Ground Discrimination System (AGDS) together with a 0.1 m squared day grab and video. Colonies were found between Holbrook Bay and Copperas Bay in the River Stour, and another colony between Levington Creek and Trimley Marshes in the River Orwell. The aim of the surveys was to monitor the condition, extent and density of the Peacock Fan Worm colonies.

Colonies were found between Holbrook Bay and Copperas Bay in the River Stour, and another colony between Levington Creek and Trimley Marshes in the River Orwell. The aim of the surveys was to monitor the condition, extent and density of the Peacock fan worm colonies. The colonies of Peacock Fan Worms present were re-surveyed in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Surveys in 2011-12 used just day grabs to determine presence of colonies compared with previous yearâs data. he survey in 2012 involved stratified day grab sampling based on extent data from 2011. The total number of living Peacock fan worms found within the 0.1 m squared day grab was recorded against a scale of 0 worms = 0, 1-49 = 1 and 50 plus worms = 2. The data were then interpolated using Vertical Mapper GIS software to create distribution models of the colonies along the Rivers Stour and Orwell.
