Coilltean Caillte - Forgotten Woodlands of Scotland
Forgotten_woods_points_AWI_altitude_aspect
The purpose of the dataset is to map - as far as possible - all Scottish place-names which in some way denote woodland coverage. Although all languages of Scotland are included, the onus is on the Gaelic language.

One set of names were extracted automatically from the gb1900 dataset, which contains every name on the 2nd edition OS dataset, from the middle to the late 19th Century. This is the most complete place-name dataset available. The grid coordinate is extracted automatically from the GB1900 gazetteer and may not denote the exact location of the place in question. The second set of names are those not obvious from the Ordnance Survey dataset, due to either: 1 The name exists on the map but it is not clear it contains a particular element. In most cases this is due to anglicisation of a Gaelic name, eg Morefield from A’Mhòr-Choille ‘the big wood’. 2 The name does not appear on the OS map at all, but comes from another source. The dataset attribute fields are: Name: woodland toponym taken from the gazetteer or other source. Grid ref : alphanumeric grid reference in British National Grid Source: Some names are sourced from the GB1900 dataset, others come from other research, that appears in the associated report. Certainty: 1 represents a fairly high degree of certainty that the name includes the element in question, 2 represents a doubt. Language of origin: Scots, Gaelic. British or Norse. Element: the specific element in question. Specificity: Generic denotes place-names containing an element denoting a tree in general, without specifying the species; Specific denotes a place-name containing an element denoting a particular species of tree; indicative denotes place-names which could indicate the evidence of trees, without containing any element denoting a tree themselves (eg types of flora). Term: Where the name denotes a specific type of tree or flora, the species is listed here. Where the term does not, the element and language is listed. Easting, Northing: coordinates to plot the data in GIS. AWI Map Origin: if the point falls within an AWI polygon then the field records the AWI map origin type. Altitude: height in metres from closest Ordnance Survey Terrain 50 metre grid square Aspect: aspect in degrees derived from closest Ordnance Survey Terrain 50 metre grid square
