Legacy BGS geothermal models: depth to the top Sherwood Sandstone Group in the Permo-Triassic Cheshire, Worcester, Wessex and East Yorkshire-Lincolnshire basins
This raster dataset represents the modelled depth in meters to the top Sherwood Sandstone Group (SSG) in the Permo-Triassic Cheshire, Wessex, Worcester and East Yorkshire-Lincolnshire basins, considered for their hot sedimentary aquifer geothermal resource potential. The maps are provided in raster format at a 100 m resolution.

These depth maps were developed as part of the assessment of the geothermal resources of Permo-Triassic basins in England, published by Rollin, K. E., G. A. Kirby, and W. J. Rowley. Atlas of geothermal resources in Europe: UK revision. British Geological Survey, Regional Geophysics Group, 1995. Depth maps of relevant horizons taken from the Atlas of Onshore Sedimentary Basins (Whittaker et al., 1985) and revised where new data had become available since their production (e.g. detailed seismic interpretations) were used to provide and refine the main geological and structural models. The 1995 digital grids of the depth to top/base of the main aquifers were generated using the Interactive Surface Modeling package, integrating both vertical and non-vertical faults identified in the seismic data. Grids were calculated at a 1000 m square node spacing and gridded at 200 x 250 m for the Cheshire Basin, providing the depth as a positive value below Ordnance Datum. The maps for each basin were merged into a single layer and converted to mAOD as part of the 2025 UK Geothermal Platform project.
