1978 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series
A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out during 1978. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded.

Three cruises were carried out in 1978: - **Silver Star 01/78 (29th March - 10th April)** 20 one-hour trawls were carried out between the 31st March and the 4th April in the area off Conwy, a further 14 one-hour trawls were carried out between the 5th and the 9th off the coast of Douglas. All commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 360 plaice, 212 whiting, 15 sole, 30 brill and 30 cod. - **Silver Star 02/78 (11th June - 30th June)** 14 one-hour trawls were carried out between 11th and 17th June off the coast of Douglas, a further 12 hauls were carried out between 19th and 22nd June at Conwy. Fresh winds prevented fishing on the 27th-28th, but the weather moderated enough for trawling stations to be completed in Liverpool Bay. All commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 457 plaice, 229 whiting, 86 sole, 16 lemon sole, 27 cod, 6 brill and 1 turbot. - **Silver Star 03/78 (8th October - 21st October)** Despite working being interrupted by gale force winds, 34 one-hour trawls were carried out in the areas of the North Wales coast, Liverpool Bay and the strata between the Manx 6-mile limit and the Cumberland 12-mile limit. All commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 671 plaice, 529 whiting, 93 sole, 61 cod, 18 lemon sole, 14 brill, 21 haddock, 1 turbot.
