Global data for soil water, groundwater and riverine freshwater dissolved organic radiocarbon
This dataset includes dissolved organic radiocarbon content and dissolved organic carbon concentration data for river waters around the globe. The riverine dataset contains already published (n=1163) and new (n=101) data between the years 1962 and 2015. Soil solution data (n=139) from North American and European natural and semi-natural ecosystems are also included, which cover the period 1988 to 2008. Groundwater data containing 49 data points from boreholes in Europe and North America are also provided. Extra data including sampling dates, locations, stable isotope (13C), water quality and qualitative descriptions of the catchments are included in the dataset. We compiled literature data for DOC concentration, [DOC], and DO14C in soil solutions, which covered the period 1989-2015 and in groundwaters, covering the period 1988-2008. We based our compilation of data for rivers on that of Marwick et al. (2015), which covered the period 1991-2012; we added additional literature data, referring to sampling dates both before and after the Marwick et al. (2015) collection, to obtain results covering the period 1962-2015. Where necessary, we used digitisation software (ENGAUGE http://markummitchell.github.io/engauge-digitizer/) to extract data from graphed results. We also compiled river discharge data where available, for single sites with multiple observations.
