Abstract

This dataset sets out the Nitrate Vulnerable Zone designations following the 4 yearly review for implementation in 2017. These were the designations prior to appeals. This dataset supersedes the previous dataset ‘Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZ) 2013 - Combined (Final Designations)’. This dataset is superseded by the current data 'Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) 2017 - Combined (Final Designations)'. Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) are areas designated as being at risk from agricultural nitrate pollution. The designations are made in accordance with the Nitrate Pollution Prevention Regulations 2015. Waters are defined within the Nitrates Directive as polluted if they contain or could contain, if preventative action is not taken, nitrate concentrations greater than 50mg/l.

This datasets was created from modelling using the following data sources: Digital 1:50,000 river centre-lines (Centre for Ecology and Hydrology), CEH Land cover map of Great Britain (Centre for Ecology and Hydrology), Geology (British Geological Survey), Population statistics per Super Output Area (Office of National Statistics), CORNINE 2006 land use maps (European Environment Agency).
