1979 - 1979 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) 1979 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series
A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out during 1979. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded.

Three cruises were carried out in 1979: - **Silver Star 01/79 (19th March - 5th April)** Groundfish surveys were carried out from the 19th - 23rd March in the Welsh coast and Liverpool Bay sectors. Strong winds prevented work until 27th March, where 4 more one-hour trawls were carried out, with 2 more the following day, before force 9 winds prevented work again. The remaining hauls in the Manx sector were completed on the 30th and 31st March. A total of 34 one-hour trawls were successfully completed, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 456 plaice, 401 whiting, 89 cod, 37 sole, 3 lemon sole and 1 brill. - **Silver Star 02/79 (25th June - 11th July)** 14 one-hour trawls were carried out on 25th June off the east coast of the Isle of Man, the vessel then sailed to Conwy on the 30th but strong winds prevented further work until the 2nd July. All remaining trawls were then carried out and completed by 6th July. 34 one-hour trawls were carried out in total, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 330 plaice, 114 whiting, 101 sole, 37 cod, 10 haddock, 2 turbot, 2 brill. - **Silver Star 03/79 (15th October - 6th November)** Groundfish surveys were carried out from 15th October off the Welsh coast and continued for the next four days. Plaice tagging commenced from 19th-26th, after which standard trawling stations were carried out in Liverpool Bay on the 27th. The vessel then sailed to Douglas on the 28th, and four trawl hauls took place on the 29th before southerly gales kept the vessel in port for the next two days. Trawling resumed on 1st November and continued until the evening of the 2nd. 30 one-hour trawls were carried out in total, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 317 plaice, 171 whiting, 56 sole, 33 cod, 2 turbot, 2 brill.
