In May 1997 the Government produced the National Air Quality Strategy (NAQS). The strategy represents a comprehensive approach to maintaining and improving the quality of ambient air in the United Kingdom.
Under the Environment Act 1995 Local Authorities are required to assess and, if necessary, take action in matters relating to air quality. If, after monitoring we are of the opinion that levels have or are likely to exceed the Government standards there is a duty to initiate remedial action and to designate an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and produce an action plan to improve air quality in the area.
This data set shows the existing Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in Cornwall.

Like other Councils, under the Environment Act 1995 Cornwall Council are required to monitor air quality in our area against the Air Quality Objectives. If air pollution is higher than these national objectives, we have to designate an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and produce an Action Plan to improve air quality in the area.
Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) have been declared for the Camborne, Pool, and Redruth (CPR) area in 2005, Bodmin in 2008 and Tideford in 2011.
New AQMAs were declared for Gunnislake and St Austell in March 2014 and a further AQMA is proposed for Truro in 2014/15.
An updated Air Quality Action Plan was published in 2013 and includes actions for Camborne, Pool, Redruth; Bodmin and Tideford. The plan will be updated in 2014 in light of the new AQMAs at Gunnislake and St Austell.
