Porpoise Feeding Areas
The distribution of porpoise feeding areas were mapped based on observations from local groups and the public (using sightings data from Shetland Biological Records Centre). These sensitive areas (to oil spills) are ranked as high density or moderate density. This map forms part of the oil spill sensitivity maps commissioned by SOTEAG.

This dataset was created in 2016 by Martin Heubeck, SOTEAG, Karen Hall, SNH and Paul Harvey, Shetland Amenity Trust and is based upon the public sightings record. Areas were drawn by hand on maps to represent feeding areas. These areas were then digitised into GIS by Marine Atlas Consultants Ltd, commissioned by SOTEAG to do oil spill sensitivity mapping for the Sullom Voe area. Although not systematically assessed, confidence levels are high. Note that small numbers and other cetaceans are not accounted for the in maps. The primary limitation of this dataset is that the species are not systematically surveyed and so there may be an observer bias.
