Abstract

Dataset containing historical Seabed drifters data. A dataset for all deployments and returns has been created. It contains the following information. Drifter Releases (By year/Drop). Drifter Releases AND Returns (By year/Drop). Each file contains information on: Lat/Long /Date of release, Lat/Long /Date of return, Days out. The Dataset contains 11704 entries for Seabed drifters (1969-1990), with a 41 percent Return’s rate.

Lineage

At Cefas (historically MAFF), from the early 1960s to 1990 large numbers of specially designed drifters were released in The Northeast Atlantic region in order to discover the speed and direction of the currents. Tags were released in quantity (50 units) at each station. Recoveries were made by fishing vessels or from beaches and different sea-areas. Historical data (1969-1990) were translated manually from logbooks into the new database. Original log-sheets, maps and any associated information were scanned and digitised.
