2000 - 2000 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Irish Sea Annual Egg Production Method (AEPM) Plankton Survey - 2000
Between August 6th and September 6th 2000 a series of ichthyoplankton surveys were carried out in the Irish Sea by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Northern Ireland and the Department of the Marine to improve stock assessment by the egg production method. Target species were cod (Gadus morhua) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). The data described here consists of the numbers of fish eggs and larvae and zooplankton, along with associated positional and ancillary data and volumes filtered.

Sampling on Cirolana/Corystes used 76cm un-encased body, 40 cm diameter nosecone, 270 um mesh main net, Guildline CTD and CEFAS logging software, auxillary un-encased PUP sampler, 5cm diameter opening nosecone, 80 um mesh net, Valeport flowmeters with CEFAS continuous logging. *Cirolana cruises 5 and 6 as recorded in the dataset, are numbered as cruise 3 in the cruise report for this survey period* Sampling on Lough Foyle used 76cm un-encased body, 40cm diameter nosecone, 270 um mesh main net, auxillary un-encased PUP sampler, 5cm diameter opening nosecone, 80 um mesh net, SeaBird CTD and Pro-net logging software, Valeport flowmeters with Pronet continuous logging. No cruise reports are available for the Lough Foyle surveys. Sampling on Celtic Voyager used 76cm un-encased body, 40cm diameter nosecone, 270 um mesh main net, auxilliary PUP net carried?, SeaBird CTD and Pro-net logging software, Valeport flowmeters with Pronet continuous logging. No cruise reports are available. Analysis at CEFAS involved separating eggs and larvae from samples. All eggs identified and measured. Eggs in size range 1.25-1.75 mm without oil globules were coded as COD (this was later changed to ZZY). These eggs were staged and measured. Where >100 eggs were found, sub-sampling undertaken. Eggs which were unmeasured were apportioned across the size distn of measured eggs. Other ZZY eggs were sub-sampled if necessary, counted and measured but not staged. Only a few PUP samples analysed to date. Involved analysis of at least 100 organisms if total species < 10 and at least 200 organisms if more species present.
