Title

Landscape Character Assessment - Loch Lomond and Trossachs NPA

Abstract

Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) is a recognised technique which identifies areas with a distinct composition of inter-related natural, physical, cultural and historical characteristics. A National Programme of LCAs was initiated by NatureScot in 1994 covering 29 regional studies carried out with local authorities and other organisations. Although the broad methodology is similar for each study (i.e. carried out in accordance with published guidance), there is not complete consistency in the naming and describing of LCTs. The 2010 Loch Lomond and the Trossachs (LLTT) LCA dataset sits alongside the National dataset, and is captured at a higher resolution. This dataset should be used in conjunction with the LLTT LCA 2010 Report.

Lineage

The Loch Lomond Regional Park Landscape Assessment (Land Use Consultants 1993) predated NatureScot's National Programme and was a classification of Regional Landscape Character Types. The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs Landscape Assessment Phase 1 - Landscape Survey - The Trossachs (TJP 1995) took account of and revised the 1993 study and provided matching information for the former Central Region. These two studies together informed The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs Landscape Assessment Phase 2 - Strategy and Guidelines - Loch Lomond & The Trossachs (TJP 1995) which primarily contains guidelines for forestry. In 2002 the national dataset was updated to correct for spatial and attribute errors in order to create a more robust dataset. At the same time the data for the LLTT area was recaptured from the earlier reports, including the LCA data for Central Region, Tayside Region and Argyll & Firth of Clyde, and merged into the surrounding LCA coverage for Scotland. This process involved clipping back polygons in the surrounding LCAs along a 'best fit' border. The 2005 LLTT Landscape Character Assessment was carried out by a number of successive consultants and aimed to bring the above studies together, as well as integrating the work of the Historic Landuse Assessment Development Project (Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland). The 2005 LCA was withdrawn soon after publication as a number of errors and inconsistencies were noticed, including an inconsistency of classifications across the three originating LCA data sets, and it was agreed that fuller, more detailed revision of the LCA would be beneficial. It was agreed that an up-to-date study (using the 2005 text and data as a starting point) would be carried out by the National Park's landscape officer, Janet Swailes, with substantial input from SNH, the National Park Authority, Forestry Commission Scotland, Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland. The updated LLTNP LCA survey was completed in 2009/2010. The creation of the GIS dataset was a desktop based exercise using, Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 background data, OS Mastermap data, all available, woodlands datasets.,RCAHMS Historic Land Use Assessment data and aerial imagery. The resultant polygons and classifications were checked by the LLTNPA Landscapes officer and the final two tier classification and symbology for the data was developed by the LLTNPA GIS team based on a "topology" and "overlying land cover " approach. The GIS data and classifications was then used by SNH to produce the revised text and the final report. Survey work 2007 - 2009 Report published 2010 GIS dataset finalized 2011
