UKGEOS Cheshire TH0424 Initial Core Scanning Dataset
An initial core scanning dataset from the TH0424 borehole that was drilled onshore at Thornton Science Park, Cheshire, UK as part of the UK Geoenergy Observatories (UKGEOS) Cheshire ground investigation funded by UKRI/NERC. The approximately 100 m long core succession comprises the Sherwood Sandstone Group. The core scanning dataset contains X-ray radiographic images and geophysical property data obtained using a Geotek rotating X-ray computed tomography (RXCT) core scanner and a Geotek multi-sensor core logger (MSCL-S) at the Core Scanning Facility (CSF) at the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Radiographic images were collected at three angles (0°, 45°, 90°) using a RXCT core scanner. The images are scaled and a detailed enhancement filter was applied to enhance core features and structures. For this reason, intensity values between different images will not be comparable. Geophysical property data was collected using a MSCL-S core scanner at 5 cm increments. The data was calibrated following procedures outlined within the MSCL manual 1 Nov 2016 – Geotek Ltd. The dataset was processed to remove data points over cracks, missing core intervals and heavily fractured sections of core. The final dataset has been aggregated into csv.file and is presented in drillers depth. To identify any instrumental drift, check pieces have been run before and after each logging day. All raw data from the core scanners will be retained by BGS and can be requested from enquiries@bgs.ac.uk
