Title

Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) Geophysical Survey 2010/1_SAMS: Loch Linnhe (11/Jan/2010 to 15/Jan/2010)

Abstract

This marine geophysical survey took place in January 2010 in Loch Linnhe on board the RV Calanus. The survey was carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) in collaboration with the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). A series of short (1.7 - 18km) survey profiles were acquired from Loch Linnhe to provide a better understanding of glacial features observed during a multibeam echosounder survey in February 2009. Sub-seabed seismic profiling data were collected using a Applied Acoustics Surface Tow Boomer. These data are archived by BGS. Paper records were also generated and these are held by SAMS. Technical details of the survey are contained in BGS Commissioned Report CR/10/046 (http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/528419/). description: GeoIndex allows users to search for information about BGS data collections covering the UK and other areas world wide. Access is free, the interface is easy to use, and it has been developed to enable users to check coverage of different types of data and find out some background information about the data. More detailed information can be obtained by further enquiry through the website.

Lineage

Geophysical equipment types used included: Surface Tow Boomer. British Geological Survey was contracted to undertake the survey on behalf of Scottish Association for Marine Science. NAVIGATION: Vessels Ashtec ADU3 global positioning system (GPS). Reference spheroid: WGS84. Projection: UTM Zone 30N. Time zone: GMT. The Ashtec GPS antenna is offset from the vessels central reference point by 0.050 m to port, 2.60 m forward and 3.65 m above. Navigation information was referenced to the common reference point (CRP) on board the vessel. This is described in the layback diagram (Cruise report: Appendix 1). SURFACE TOW BOOMER: AA300 Boomer plate, 300J was generated and supplied to the boomer plate from the CSP-D 2400. The boomer, towed from the port side of the vessel, fired 3 times a second consistently throughout the survey. Equipment included: Coda DA2000 acquisition system; SIG hydrophone; BGS amplifier; Thermal printer; Picoscope. Coda settings: TVF: Low Pass = 2000Hz cut-off; High Pass = 800Hz cut-off; Band Pass = 1800 – 2000Hz; Voltage range of active channels: ±5V. For more detailed information on the acquisition equipment and data collection techniques, operational standards, data processing methods and quality control procedures used on this survey see the Report of Survey/Cruise Report and associated documentation where available. The information available may vary depending on the age of the survey. Data are checked and loaded to the BGS Coastal and Marine data management system following BGS marine data management procedures.
