Seawater temperature records for the UK Shelf - 17 - Cefas ESM2 Profiler/mini CTD Logger
ESM2
This dataset has been extracted as part of an exercise to assemble "all" Cefas Temperature Data and publish it in a Data paper. It is one of 17 Cefas data sources assembled. ESM2 is a Cefas developed micro logger for applications requiring a small low power logger with integrated sensors and battery. It has standard sensors for conductivity, temperature, depth, optical backscatter and roll & pitch. Data are saved compact flash cards which are easily removed for rapid data transfer. It was initially developed to be a handheld profiler that could be used from small boats and/or when a conventional large rosette couldn't be used. It is now used routinely in place of traditional CTD equipment e.g. on SmartBuoy related work and, because it also accommodates optional sensors, it is widely used on RV Cefas Endeavour research cruises, providing profiles of the water column for plankton and fisheries work. The temperature sensor used is an FSI CT model.

Temperature sensors are calibrated annually at Cefas against certified platinum resistance thermometers. Data are subject to a full quality assurance procedure which assigns flags to poor quality data (e.g. for sensor malfunction, drift). The multiple sources are described in 17 separate metadata entries under the same Title, e.g. Seawater temperature records for the UK Shelf - 15 - RV Cefas Endeavour FerryBox Monitoring System. These data have been described in detail via the following publication. Morris, D. J., Pinnegar, J. K., Maxwell, D. L., Dye, S. R., Fernand, L. J., Flatman, S., Williams, O. J., and Rogers, S. I.: Over 10 million seawater temperature records for the United Kingdom Continental Shelf between 1880 and 2014 from 17 Cefas (United Kingdom government) marine data systems, Earth Syst. Sci. Data, 10, 27–51, https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-10-27-2018, 2018.
