The dataset is areas of 'Open parkland' that is defined as non-forested open ground habitat consisting of widely spaced mature, veteran or ancient trees where crown cover does not exceed 20% of the land area. It does not include areas incorporating hard stands for caravans. Parkland excludes arboreta and areas of widely spaced young trees meeting HAP criteria. Open parkland is a Secondary Land Use Code (SLUC) designated in the Forest Service sub-compartment database. SLUC are attributes applied to sub compartments, for forest management purposes, and for reporting in relation to Primary Land Use Objectives.

Areas of parkland have been identified in Forest Service forests after a series of consultations and field outings had taken place between Forest Service, NIEA and CMS. Parkland excludes arboreta and areas of widely spaced young trees meeting HAP criteria. The data has been extracted from Forest Service sub-compartment database. The data is maintained by the Forest Service on the Geographical Information System (GIS). Secondary Land Use Codes are attributes applied to sub compartments, for forest management purposes, and for reporting in relation to Primary Land Use Objectives.
