Census 2011 - Postcode Units
Frozen Postcode 2011
Postcode unit boundaries are created and maintained by National Records of Scotland (NRS) for every live small user postcode so that the entire land surface of Scotland is covered by postcode polygons. This is the set of postcode boundaries used for 2011 census outputs. The dataset contains 145,690 postcode polygons.

The history of creating and maintaining the postcode dataset is contained in the live postcode boundary dataset. Because we built up geographies such as council areas from postcodes we were aware of situations where the NRS council are boundary did not match exactly with the OS BoundaryLine product. To ensure consistent alignment of the Census geographies with OS BoundaryLine the following postcode boundaries required minor amendment: Those that did not align with BoundaryLine’s council boundaries Those that did not align with BoundaryLine’s Mean Low Water Those that did not align with BoundaryLine’s portrayal of lochs Those that did not align with BoundaryLine’s portrayal of estuaries and rivers Overall just under 9,000 amendments were made but the amendments did not affect the assignment of any higher area geographies. A boundary change between Glasgow City Council and East Dunbartonshire Council came into force in 1 April 2011 after Census Day (27 March 2011) has been included because of its close proximity to Census Day. The boundaries are available for two geographic extents: Extent of the Realm (EoR) The boundaries in this dataset are to the Mean Low Water mark so that the coastline is extended to be consistent with Local Authorities. and Clipped to the coastline with inland water removed (MHW) The boundaries in this dataset have been clipped to the coastline (Mean High Water Mark) with inland water removed. This version closely represents map users expectations of how a coastal boundary should look. The Standard Area measurements were used to identify bodies of inland water and subsequently removed. Revisions and Corrections Revision to postcode boundaries at boundary between East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire Council areas (7 October 2013) Postcodes PA2 7DA, PA2 7TX, PA2 8TY, G53 7TH, G78 1HJ, and G78 1TJ have been amended following a correction to Ordnance Survey BoundaryLine.
