2005 English Nature (EN) Chesil and the Fleet, intertidal sediment survey
MRNE01340000003B
Survey name: 2005 English Nature (EN) Chesil and the Fleet, intertidal sediment survey This is a collation of surveys to gather data and evidence from a variety of marine environments. The survey purposes vary and include recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ) Phase I or II verification surveys, condition assessments, surveys of features of Natura 2000 sites (Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area), Intertidal surveys, Benthic grab surveys and others. All surveys are carried out to specified standards and follow established methodologies. Attribution statement: © Natural England copyright. "Emu Limited was commissioned by English Nature to undertake a littoral survey of the intertidal sediment between Smallmouth and the Narrows, Fleet Lagoon, European Marine Site (EMS), in order to assess sediment type and infauna benthic community compositions. Results gathered will provide baseline information to support English Natures overall programme of monitoring and surveillance of the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Special Protection Area (SPA) into the future and will also be used to inform Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) condition reporting for the SSSI which underpins the European Marine Site. The main aims of the survey were to undertake a Phase II biotope mapping and a quantitative sampling at selected stations in order to obtain infauna and sediment type information of the littoral sediment habitats and communities of the Chesil and the Fleet SAC/SPA. Specifically, the geographical extent of the sediment feature, as well as the extent of saltmarsh encroachment was mapped. The richness and abundance of the infaunal communities was also assessed by sediment sampling at selected sampling stations. The biotope mapping and sampling exercise was undertaken on 18th and 19th October 2005 during low water spring tides. On 19th October the tide did not recede as far as it had done on the previous day; this, coupled with a strong onshore westerly wind, resulted in some of the lower intertidal shore areas remaining submerged. The position of boundaries of each intertidal polygon were gained by using hand held Global Positioning System (GPS) (Garmin 12XL and Garmin 76), as well as distance and bearing fromvisual markers on the shore, and plotted onto the field map. All GPS survey positions were derived in Ordinance Survey Great Britain (OSGB) 36 Datum, with positions recorded in British National Grid (BNG) format. Sketches of the shore were also made to aid mapping, where necessary. Polygon boundaries were identified by a change in the dominance or occurrence of conspicuous species or communities in combination with changes in physical characteristics of the habitat. Digital photographs (Nikon Coolpix 7900) were taken during the survey, in order to illustrate the location of polygon boundaries in relation to adjacent polygons and features on the shore."
