2001 - 2003 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Irish Sea Plaice Distribution Project Plankton Survey
Ichthyoplankton and beach surveys were undertaken in 2001, 2002 and 2003 by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science to examine plaice spawning and settling juvenile distribution in the eastern Irish Sea. This data consists of: 1) Numbers of fish eggs and larvae identified from the main net plankton samples, along with associated positional and ancillary data and volumes filtered. 2) Numbers and lengths of 0-group plaice, shrimp (Crangon crangon), crabs and other species collected during sampling from the beach with a small beam trawl. 3) Micro-increment counts of prepared otoliths taken from juvenile plaice.

Ichthyoplankton and zooplankton samples collected from RV Prince Madog and charter MFV Resolute used Gulf VII 53cm un-encased body with 20cm main net opening and 270um mesh net and end-bag. Auxillary 'pup' sampler with 5cm diameter nose cone opening and 80um mesh net also used. FSI-m CTD, Valeport flowmeters with internal logging package. Sampling on Corystes used Gulf VII, 76cm un-encased body, 40cm diameter nosecone, 270 um mesh main net, auxillary un-encased pup net, 5cm nosecone, 80 um mesh net, guildline CTD, Valeport flowmeters with continuous logging. Beach sampling used 1.5 and 2 m beam trawls hauled perpendicular to shore for 100m (from sea to shore), nets 6 - 10 mm mesh( stretched) Zooplankton samples preserved onboard in 4% buffered formaldehyde and transferred to Cefas Lowestoft for analysis. Fish eggs and larvae picked out of the preserved samples from the main net using low power microscopy, sub-sampling undertaken as necessary. Ichthyoplankton identified using Cefas standard protocol. Egg diameter measured for all eggs. Fish eggs identified to species group/species where possible based on key features such as presence/absence of oil globules, size etc. All intact larvae identified to species or group level. Samples re-preserved and stored. Pup samples not analysed, in storage. Beach samples: catch sorted at collection and 0- and 1-group plaice wrapped in foil and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Larger catch items i.e. Crabs or larger fish were counted, measured and put back into the sea. Measurements recorded in red logbooks. Rest of catch (mostly shrimps) preserved in 4% buffered formadehyde. All samples transferred to Cefas Lowestoft. Plaice were dried, weighed, and otoliths removed for age determination. Otoliths attached to glass cover slips using 'Crystalbond' resin, ground using fine milling paper and daily increments counted under high power microscope.
