Title

Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Fulmar recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ)

Abstract

Updated habitat map resulting from an intergrated analysis of the EGS 2012 acoustic data and the Cefas Survey of 2012 (Fulmar rMCZ groundtruthing survey onboard the RV Cefas Endeavour between 6 and 10 May 2012, Cruise ID: CEND 8/12). Sediment types at each ground-truthing station were used to inform a semi-automated process of map production using object-based image analysis (OBIA). The Majority of the seabed was classified as "A5.3 Subtidal mud" with smaller areas of "A5.4 Subtidal mixed sediments" Additional information source: Curtis, M., Archer, S., Jenkins, C. 2015. Lineage

The broadscale habitat map was derived from acoustic data collected by EGS on behalf of Cefas between 20 and 28 March 2012. Multibeam bathymetry data were collected in accordance with the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Standards for Hydrographic Surveys-Order 1a (Special publication 44, Edition 5). Backscatter processing was carried out by Cefas using the software package QPS FM Geocoder Toolkit to produce fully compensated and corrected backscatter mosaics. The acoustic data covered approximately 13% of the total Fulmar rMCZ. Ground-truthing data was collected by Cefas between the 6 and 10 May 2012. Sediment samples were collected using a 0.1 m2 Hamon grab and analysed through dry sieving and laser diffraction following recommended methodology by the National Marine Biological Analytical Quality Control (NMBAQC) Scheme. Sediment samples were then classified according to the modified folk triangle to help inform the mapping process. Video and photographic stills data was also collected using a Kongsberg camera mounted on a drop-down camera frame. Habitats were mapped using object-based image analysis using the eCognition software package. The backscatter mosaic was segmented into small objects which were merged to form larger areas. The PSA ground-truthing data was used as a training set to inform the K-Nearest Neighbour classification algorithm which classified the remaining seabed. The updated broadscale habitat map was then compared to the video and camera data and to the original PSA data to check the accuracy of the map.
