Title

2014 - 2014 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Solent Bass Pre-recruit Survey (FSS: SOLENT) September 2014

Abstract

A trawl survey of bass in the Solent carried out by Cefas in September 2014 as part of a time series that commenced in the late 1970s. The purpose of the survey is to develop a time-series of pre-recruit indices for bass in and near the nursery grounds within the Solent area.

Lineage

Thirty four of the 35 planned stations were completed. The tow off Stone Point was not fished due to static fishing gear. A detailed description of the history, survey gear and methods used are described in a Cefas laboratory report “Surveying fish populations in the Solent and adjacent harbours using the CEFAS bass trawl.” Bass ( *Dicentrarchus labrax* ) were caught at 28 stations, and fish at ages 2 – 4, which are included in the abundance index, were taken at 23 stations. A total of 4999 bass were caught, 4932 within the harbours and 67 outside. Over 4,600 of the bass were 0 group fish, of which 99% were from Station QQ in Langstone harbour. Age compositions of the survey catches of bass were obtained from the numbers at length together with ages determined from 188 bass scale samples taken and read during the survey. A full list of other fish species caught on this survey is provided below. Cefas holds data on catch rates of all species where numbers are recorded. +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Bass |*Dicentrarchus labrax* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Black sea bream |*Spondyliosoma | | |cantharus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Reticulated |*Callionymus | |dragonette |reticulatus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Eel |*Anguilla anguilla* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Flounder |*Platichthys flesus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Gilt-head bream |*Sparus auratus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Golden grey mullet |*Liza aurata* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Greater pipefish |*Syngnathus acus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Herring |*Clupea harengus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Horse mackerel |*Trachurus trachurus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Lesser spotted |*Scyliorhinus Canicula* | |dogfish | | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Mackerel |*Scomber scombrus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Plaice |*Pleuronectus platessa* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Red mullet |*Mullus surmuletus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Sand gobies |*Pomatoschistus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Sandeel |*Ammodytes tobianus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Sand-smelt |*Atherina presbyter* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Sole |*Solea solea* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Sprat |*Sprattus sprattus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Starry smooth hound |*Mustelus asterias* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Thornback ray |*Raja clavata* | +----------------------+-------------------------+ |Whiting |*Merlangius merlangus* | +----------------------+-------------------------+
