Title

Crushed rock-water experimental data investigating the role of temperature in generating hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide from silicate rocks (NERC Grants NE/W005506/1, NE/S001670/1)

Abstract

The data was generated from a range of laboratory experiments where a range of silicate rocks (granite, basalt, peridotite) were crushed in oxygen-free conditions, deoxygenated water added, and the generation of hydrogen gas and hydrogen peroxide followed over a week. Results were compared to rock-free controls. The data was collected to provide insight into the production of oxidants (such as hydrogen peroxide) along tectonically active regions of the subsurface, and how the oxidants might influence subsurface microbiology.

Lineage

Laboratory experiments were carried out where three different igneous rocks (granite, basalt, peridotite) were crushed under oxygen-free conditions within a planetary ball mill at 500 rpm for 30 minutes. Deoxygenated water was then added to the crushed rocks within a nitrogen chamber. Triplicate gastight vials of each rock type, and rock free controls, were then incubated in batches at a range of different temperatures (from 60 deg C to 121 deg C) and the generation of hydrogen gas and hydrogen peroxide (alongside dissolved iron, pH, and hydroxyl radicals) monitored over time for up to a week. The initial grain sizes and number of Si surface radicals of the crushed rocks were also measured.
