MRNE01340000006D
Survey name: 2002-4 Emu Ltd Severn Estuary Intertidal Biotope mapping Baseline Phase 1 Study This is a collation of surveys to gather data and evidence from a variety of marine environments. The survey purposes vary and include recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ) Phase I or II verification surveys, condition assessments, surveys of features of Natura 2000 sites (Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area), Intertidal surveys, Benthic grab surveys and others. All surveys are carried out to specified standards and follow established methodologies. Attribution statement: © Natural England copyright. "2006 Emu Ltd Severn Estuary Intertidal Biotope mapping Baseline Phase 1 StudySevern Estuary has long been regarded as a site of international natural heritage importance but managing the wide variety of significant wildlife interests against a background of increasing human pressures represents huge challenges for the UK statutory conservation agencies. To mitigate for these challenges, English Nature commissioned Emu Ltd. to construct a Geographical Information System (GIS) database populated with Phase I level intertidal biotope data for the entire Severn Estuary site (English side). The study aim was to provide a powerful management GIS tool to support decision making processes and allow rapid assessments of the effects of human activities on local intertidal ecological features. The Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) has previously completed similar mapping of intertidal biotopes for the Welsh portion of the site and therefore, this area has been excluded from the current study. Note that where substratum percentages were less than 1%, these were omitted due to total % going over 100% if they were included."
