MEDIN Gazetteer of Marine Points of Interest v2 (November 2013)

Abstract

A GIS dataset consisting of a merged dataset consisting of points and centroids of line and polygon features for marine points of interest in the UK. There are 50,163 features in total, for example, "Dogger Bank", "Wolf Rock", "Bude Bay" and "Anton Dohrn Seamount". The constituent datasets are separately available as GIS layers; MEDIN Gazetteer of Named Marine Areas v2 (November 2013), MEDIN Gazetteer of Coastline Features and MEDIN Gazetteer of Sea Features.

Lineage

The UK Marine Gazetteer Points of Interest was created for MEDIN from data sourced from the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) electronic navigational charts, Ordnance Survey 50K gazetteer and out-of-copyright charts specifically digitised for MEDIN. Data from the UKHO charts and MEDIN sea and ocean areas, where polygon and line features, are represented in this dataset as points (based on the centroid of the feature). This dataset will contain duplicates, for example, where feature names are similar, but not identical, or where features have a Gaelic name in one dataset and an English name in another or where features have a large extent (such as bars and banks) and the centroids of equivalent features in different datasets are not within 1-2km.
