1971 - 2015 Dove Marine Laboratory Benthic Station P (North Sea) Time Series Data. Benthic samples taken from Station P, 18.5 km off the North - East coast of England, using a 0.1m2 Van Veen grab, since January 1971, initially at 2 monthly intervals (1971) with 30 replicates taken. The frequencies of sampling occurrences declined to one sampling occurrence in January - March with five replicates taken per occurrence until 2015. The samples are sieved over a 0.5mm mesh and fixed in formaldehyde. The samples are processed in the lab and fauna is extracted and identified to species level, where possible, in abundance per square metre. Sample collection and data processing and publication was finalised in 2015.
Benthic sampling has been re-initiated in March 2021, with PSA and sediment for eDNA taken.

The data consists of benthic infauna (macroinvertebrate) abundance per meter squared; collected, analysed and published between 1971 and 2015, by Newcastle and Liverpool universities. The samples were sieved over 0.5 mm sieve, extracted and identified to species level where possible, after fixation. However, a few later studies raised species to genus to avoid potential error by various analysts during the circa 40 year time frame. Abundant taxa consist of Heteromastus, Levinsinia and Prinospio. Long - term trends, bentho - pelagic coupling, fishing and climate change impacts have been investigated within this time series. Station P lies within a Nephrops grounds, which has been fished heavily, potentially having a major influence on the community structure. Buchanan and Warwick (1974) and Buchanan and Moore (1986b) give details of sampling. The number of grabs taken at each sampling occurrence declined over the years, 1971- 1972 (30 grabs), 1973 - 1978 (10 grabs) and post-1979 were 5 grabs.
