Great Britain's Rivers and Inland Waters

GB Rivers and Inland Waters

Abstract

This is a national coverage rivers and inland water bodies dataset for Great Britain. The geometries for this dataset have been derived from Ordnance Survey Meridian 2 data at 1:50,000 scale and merged into a single dataset that covers the whole of Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). The rivers and inland water bodies have been named where possible, with the names coming from OS MasterMap data.

Additional information source

This dataset comprises three separate ESRI shapefiles: one for the rivers, one for the extension to the rivers into estuaries and one for the inland water bodies (lochs, lakes etc.) Rivers that have a polygon extension are flagged with 1 in the gb_rivers.NEEDSEXT attribute. The gb_rivers.EXT_ID attribute then corresponds to the gb_river_extensions.FEAT_ID in the gb_rivers_extensions polygon shapefile so you can match the polyline and polygon parts and get the complete footprint of the River Clyde rather than having it stop as a line some distance east of the city centre. The gb_inland_water and gb_rivers geometries were taken direct from OS Meridian. Gaps in names assigned to gb_rivers and gb_inland_water features were filled in using cartographic text held in OS MasterMap by buffering the gb_rivers polylines / gb_inland_water polygons and assigning the most likely placename based on text frequency, height and proximity. gb_river extensions was derived from the coastline held in OS Meridian.
