UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP)- strandings around the UK coast (1990-present)
The collaborative UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) has been running since 1990 and is funded by Defra and the Devolved Administrations. It coordinates the investigation of all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), marine turtles and basking sharks that strand around the UK coastline. Information is recorded on each individual stranding, with a proportion retrieved for systematic investigation at post-mortem to establish a cause of death, to gain a better understanding of the threats that these animals face in UK waters.

This dataset was collected by the collaborative UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme, under contract to Defra and the Devolved Administrations in Scotland and Wales (current contract MB0111, 2011-2014). Information on strandings around the UK coast has been collected from 1990 onwards. If any sensitive species or biotope records are present within this dataset, they will have been removed. If you wish to request access to sensitive species records, please contact the metadata contact. The UK Sensitive Species list has been agreed by UK statutory bodies and relevant experts. It can be viewed here https://docs.nbnatlas.org/sensitive-species-list/. Please note sensitive species lists can vary across the UK.
Data access and use can be requested by contacting Rob Deaville.
