Title

All UK Special Protected Areas (SPAs) with marine components

Abstract

This spreadsheet contains Special Protection Areas (SPAs) with marine components are defined as those sites with qualifying Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) Annex I species or regularly occurring migratory species that are dependent on the marine environment for all or part of their lifecycle, where these species are found in association with intertidal or subtidal habitats. The definition of SPAs with marine components is set out in the following paper: http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/pdf/MN2KPG16_13_MN2KDefs.pdf PLEASE NOTE - through ongoing UK MPA stocktake work (http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-7438) the SPA qualifying interest features that are considered 'marine' (as opposed to terrestrial-only) are being reviewed. Furthermore, the recommendations of the 2001 SPA review are at different stages of implemention in the UK (particularly with regard to the submission of updated site details to the European Commission, upon which this dataset depends). Therefore the "SPA Marine Interest Features" of inshore SPAs provided here may not be the latest data on SPA features formally adopted by the respective Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Scottish Natural Heritage and Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs (Northern Ireland); the relevant Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies should be contacted for the latest data on inshore SPA marine qualifying interest features. This issue does not apply to offshore SPAs and SPAs classified or amended in 2017, for which this dataset is fully up-to-date. The SPA Sites worksheet lists the sites with marine components and their reference attributes. This includes: Site code, Site name, Site status, Country, CP2 Region, Feature type, Marine interest features, Common name, Population type and Annex I/ROMS. Please note that habitats are not listed as qualifying interest features of SPAs but are documented in section 4.1 (General site character) of the Standard Natura 2000 Data Form. For this reason we list marine habitats in SPAs separately in the SPA Marine Habitats worksheet. This dataset is supported by a shapefile available at: http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/ProtectedSites/SACselection/gis_data/terms_conditions.asp

Lineage

Data was sourced from country agencies and collated. Version update history: UKSPAswithMarineComponents_20171130_LIVE_WEB.xls - New additions of Falmouth Bay to St Austell Bay SPA and Irish Sea Front SPA. Site attribute and feature data updates following boundary changes to Dungeness, Romney Marsh & Rye Bay SPA, Liverpool Bay SPA, Outer Thames Estuary SPA, and Poole Harbour SPA. Change to feature data for Chesil Beach and The Fleet SPA. UKSPAswithMarineComponents_20170720_LIVE_WEB.xls - Morecambe Bay SPA and Duddon Estuary SPA have been replaced by Morecambe Bay and Duddon Estuary SPA. - New addition of Northern Cardingan Bay / Gogledd Bae Ceredigion SPA, Anglesey Terns / Morwenoliaid Ynys Môn SPA and Northumberland Marine SPA. - Attribute data and/or boundary changes to Skomer, Skokholm and the Seas off Pembrokeshire / Sgomer, Sgogwm a Moroedd Benfro SPA - formerly Skokholm and Skomer SPA, Hamford Water SPA, Coquet Island SPA and Northumbria Coast SPA. UKSPAswithMarineComponents_20160525_LIVE_WEB.xls - Extension and reclassification of Dungeness to Pett Level SPA. The site name is now 'Dungness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay SPA'. Boundary, area, latitude, longitude and qualifying features have been amended. UKSPAswithMarineComponents_20160127_LIVE_WEB.xls - Update covering: - the revision to Natura 2000 Standard Data Forms and the submission of data to the European Commission in December 2015 - new species features, in particular those introduced via the SPA extension work in Scotland - removal of 9 SPAs from the list following reviews by the country agencies of which sites contain marine components. These sites remain designated for terrestrial/freshwater features but are no longer considered to have marine components. - addition of Northumbria Coast SPA which is now considered to contain marine components UKSPAswithMarineComponents_20150518_LIVE_WEB.xls - Corrected error in Grassholm SPA - Northern gannet (Morus bassunus) is a marine feature, which also makes the site absent of "Non-marine interest features. UKSPAswithMarineComponents_20150417_LIVE_WEB.xls - Extensions to 3 Welsh SPAs - Glannau Aberdaron (UK9013121), Grassholm (UK9014041) and Skokholm & Skomer (UK9014051): - For Glannau Aberdaron, changed Area, Lat, Long and added Red-billed chough (wintering) to ""SPA Marine Interest Features"" tab and habitat N02 to ""SPA Marine Habitats"" tab - Added Grassholm and Skokholm & Skomer to spreadsheet as new entries UKSPAswithMarineComponents_24_03_15_LIVE_WEB.xls - Creation of the spreadsheet to: - provide SPA site, marine interest feature (species and assemblages) and marine habitat data - list the non-marine features that also occur in SPAs with marine components - draw these data from a live spreadsheet connected to the underlying databases
