Carbon and nitrogen flux, meteorological, management and soil data from a grazed, cut and fertilised temperate grassland in south east Scotland
This dataset contains measured daily values of precipitation, air and soil temperature, soil water content, measured net ecosystem exchange (NEE) fluxes using eddy covariance, calculated gross primary production (GPP), terrestrial ecosystem respiration (TER) and net biome production (NBP) fluxes using an online tool (http://www.bgc-jena.mpg.de/~MDIwork/eddyproc/upload.php), measured fluxes of methane and nitrous oxide using static chambers and measured fluxes of nitrous oxide using eddy covariance, measured fluxes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) using automatic chambers, measured nitrogen and carbon leaching, livestock density, nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) input from mineral and organic fertiliser and yield of a managed grassland (Easterbush, 03°02'W, 55°52' N, 190 m a.s.l ) in South East Scotland. Data were collected between January 2002 and December 2010. Furthermore the dataset contains one off soil carbon and nitrogen data collected in 2004 and 2010. The dataset also contains monthly dry N deposition data from a field nearby Easterbush (about 300 m distance) measured with a DELTA system from 2002-2010. The data were collected as part of the three European projects GREENGRASS (EC EVK2-CT2001-00105), the NitroEurope Integrated Project (contract 017841) and CarboEurope (Contract No. GOCE-CT-2003-505572). The field site was setup by Prof. Mark A. Sutton and other members of staff from CEH in 1998. The data contained in this data base were collected within the three European projects GREENGRASS (EC EVK2-CT2001-00105), the NitroEurope Integrated Project (contract 017841) and CarboEurope (Contract No. GOCE-CT-2003-505572) from 2002 till 2010. Meteorological data were collected by Mhairi Coyle, eddy covariance data for carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes were collected by Carole Helfter and Claire Campbell, and eddy covariance data for nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes were collected by Chiara Di Marco and Daniela Famulari. Data for N2O and methane (CH4) fluxes measured by chambers were collected by Stephanie Jones and Margaret Anderson, nitrogen oxides (NOx) flux data measured with auto chambers were collected by Stephanie Jones and Ute Skiba and dry deposition concentration data were collected by Netty van Dijk and Sim Tang. For leaching data suction cups were installed by Jan Siemens and Reimo Kindler, samples were collected by Stephanie Jones and Margaret Anderson and samples were analysed and fluxes calculated by Jan Siemens and Reimo Kindler. Soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) data were collected and analysed by Marion Schrumpf and Klaus Kaiser. Management data for fertiliser input and harvest were provided by the farmer, while animal numbers were recorded by Mhairi Coyle, Carole Helfter, Chiara Di Marco, Daniela Famulari. Stephanie Jones, Margaret Anderson and Ute Skiba. Field equipment was installed by Ivan Simmons, Ian Leith and Julia Drewer. Further detail is provided in the supporting documentation. Details of instruments used and their detection limits are provided in the NitroEurope data base (http://www.nitroeurope.eu.) and the CarboEurope database (http://www.carboeurope.org). A detailed description of the datasets, including methodology and discussion of the findings can be found in the following peer-reviewed article: Jones, S.
