The primary legislation setting the structure of the planning system is the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997, which designates the area of the planning authority to be that of the local authority. In Scotland, LPAs are comprised of the 32 Local Authorities and the 2 National Park Authorities. Planning Authority boundaries are contiguous with Local Authority boundaries as delineated in Ordnance Survey's BoundaryLine product, with the exception of where the area falls within a national park.
