Dredge Contaminant Seabed Data in UK Waters 1998 - 2019
Dredge sediment contaminant concentrations, including trace metals, organotoxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) data collated under the Action Level Review Project by Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) within UK waters from 1998 to 2022. The purpose of this study was to determine potential impacts of proposed action levels in the assessment of dredged sediment for licensing of disposal at sea.

Action Levels (ALs) are thresholds which are used to determine whether dredged material is suitable for disposal at sea, by providing a proxy risk assessment for potential impacts to biological features such as fish and benthos. There are two thresholds, Action Level 1 (AL1) is the lower threshold and Action Level 2 (AL2) is the upper threshold. Sediments with contaminant concentrations lower than AL1 are generally considered acceptable for disposal at sea, pending other considerations such as physical suitability for the disposal site and potential beneficial uses and sediments with contaminant concentrations above AL2 are considered unacceptable for uncontrolled disposal at sea without special handing and containment (MMO, 2015). Sediments with contaminant concentrations between AL1 and AL2 are evaluated using a weight of evidence approach currently. Dredge sediment contaminant data was collated and assessed. A user-friendly and accessible sediment management framework application has been developed. Historical data for Scotland and Wales has been included. All data undergoes quality assurance checks as part of the licensing assessment. Laboratories are validated for the required methodologies.Mason, C.; Vivian, C.; Griffith, A.; Warford, L.; Hynes, C.;Barber, J.; Sheahan, D.; Bersuder, P.; Bakir, A.; Lonsdale, J.-A.
