Standardised list of human activities in the marine environment

This table is a list of human activities associated with the marine environment and their descriptions. This list was created after a review of previous attempts to link human activities to marine pressures so that a standardised UK pressure-activities matrix could be constructed in which pressure-activities links are identified. This is an agreed list and definitions of human activities in the marine environment. Coastal and marine ecosystems have historically been subjected to a number of human-induced pressures associated with a variety of marine activities and developments. The mechanisms through which specific human activities impact the marine environment, however, are still poorly understood.

This list has been formally agreed by: the Marine Assessment and Reporting Group (MARG), the Healthy and Biologically Diverse Seas Evidence Group (HBDSEG) and the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Stategy (UKMMAS) sub-group on spatial data collation on human activities and pressures.
Numerous studies have attempted to describe human activities believed to be associated with marine pressures however to date no standardised list of human activities exists. In an attempt to identify the most appropriate human activities list to take forward for use in the standardised UK pressure-activities matrix, this study compared multiple lists of human activities compiled from a variety of sources \\jncc-corpfile\JNCC Corporate Data\Marine\Evidence\PressuresImpacts\3. Pressures_Activities\Combined_P-A_MatrixCombined_P_A_Matrix)data_sourcesw.csv
The human activities lists compared within this assessment differed between studies. Key differences included:
- How activities were grouped e.g. whether ports were in shipping or coastal infrastructure categories.
- Terminology
- Scale of detail e.g. broad categories such as âFisheriesâ vs. sub-categories such as âFishing â demersal trawlingâ and âFishing â dredgingâ.
Most of these differences would not ultimately result in different datasets contributing to a single pressure.
