Title

2009-2011 North Sea and English Channel Sediment Profiling Image Analysis

Abstract

SPI images providing photographic profiles of the upper layers of seabed sediments (to c. 30 cm depth) at sampling sites in the North Sea and English Channel, used to measure the depth of the aRPD (apparent Redox Potential Discontinuity) layer, a colour change in the sediment profile which approximates the depth to which oxygen penetrates the sediment.

Lineage

Sediment Profile Imagery (SPI) is a useful technique to study in situ seafloor organisms and processes that cannot be directly observed via other equipment (i.e. grabs). The instrument acts like an inverted periscope and pushes slowly into the surface sediments to take high quality digital photographs of the upper sediment layers (to a macimum of C. 30 cm depth) and the sediment/water interace. The instrument used was an Ocean Imaging Systems model 3731-D. The sampling protocol required five replicate samples to be collected at each station, which was achieve by 'hopping' the SPI across the seabed by about 10 m per hop. This set of images was collected during Cefas Cruises CEND 15/09, CEND 11/10 and CEND 11/11. Those for CEND 15/09 and CEND 10/11 are stored in a 2-level folder structure, the first level identifying the Cruise and the second identifying the Date, Station Code and Station Number of the sampling event (e.g. '20100608 OG Stn 67'). Those for CEND11/11 are in a single folder with each filename identifying the Station Code and the sequential number of the image (e.g. 'C12_008.JPG'. Note that two photos were taken per 'hop', the best one being retained for analysis). The images were collected as part of the Defra funded project ME5301 entitled "Mapping the structure, function and sensitivity of seabed sediment habitats to support assessment of the sea-floor status and the broadscale monitoring and management of the benthic environment".
