1972 - Ongoing Dove Marine Laboratory Benthic Station M1 (North Sea) Time Series Data
Initiated in 1972, as long term monitoring with station P. M1 was the central station at a historic sludge disposal site in the Central North Sea, approximately 10.5 km away from the English North - East coast, with a depth of 55 m and a muddy sandy sediment. In 1972 and 1973 bimonthly (20 replicates) sampling occurred with sampling decreasing to September and March annually with 5 replicates taken at each occurrence. A 0.1 m2 Van Veen grab was used to collect samples passed over a 0.5 mm sieve and taxon abundance recorded per metre squared (Buchanan and Warwick, 1974). Community stability was seen in the period between 1974 and 1980, which was lost in 1980 - 1983. Changes in species ranking and increases in total numbers and biomass during the latter period.

Station M1 is a monitoring station (central station of 6) within a historic sewage sludge disposal grounds initiated in 1972, sampled 20 x bimonthly (1972 and 1973), 20 x 0.1 m2 in September to March, reducing to five replicates per occurrence. The other sampling station, M2 - M5 were sampled annually (September) with 10 replicates. These are not included in the time series due to the lack of continuation. Sampling was largely standardised according to Buchanan and Warwick (1974). Temporary functioning alteration has been found in previous studies coinciding with a 1980's regime shift in the North Sea, with a period of six years of significant alteration with instable, trait composition. Appendix A (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0141113615000483?via%3Dihub#appsec1) gives supplementary data on sampling effort over time (D.S. Clare, L.A. Robinson and C.L.J. Frid). Some later studies (Bremner, Frid Roger, 2003) analysed at genera level or above to overcome difficulties of mis - identification or changes in taxonomy in the over 40 year time period.
