2010 - 2010 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Trials with a Modified Commercial Trawl 2010/11 - Fisheries Science Partnership
FSP Modified commercial trawl survey
To learn more about the behaviour of cod and other fish as they enter the net by modifying a standard NE coast trawl to hold two separator panels running the entire length of the net. A series of hauls will be undertaken to see where cod and the other fish are captured in the net. This will lead to better designs of cod-avoidance gears.

This work was carried out as part of the Fisheries Science Partnership (FSP), a Defra-funded collaborative programme of scientific research between the UK fishing industry and scientists. The FV "Jubilee Spirit" was chartered for six days in September 2010 to work off the north east coast of England carrying out fishing trials with a demersal trawl fitted with two internal vertical separator panels and three codends. The aim of the work was to be able to make a robust and statistically sound comparison of the catches obtained from the three individual sections of a purpose-built trawl. The trawl was rigged with two internal vertical separator panels which ran the entire length of the trawl. Each of the three sections was fitted with an individual codend in order to keep their catches separate. Trials were undertaken with 100-mm diamond-mesh codends. It was intended that the information learned will help fishermen and scientists better understand where fish of different lengths and species enter the trawl and may help in the development of tools to improve the selectivity of demersal trawls. ...
