E. coli monitoring data in bivalve shellfish covering England and Wales
Monitoring of bivalve flesh for the statutory faecal indicator E.coli is a requirement under retained EU Regulation 2019/627 to allow the classification of bivalve mollusc harvesting areas according to their faecal pollution status. Classification categories (A, B or C) are assigned on the basis of the data according to the regulatory requirements and the Food standards Agency protocol published here: `Shellfish classification | Food Standards Agency`_ The classification categories determine the level of shellfish processing required prior to human consumption. Data is updated on the Cefas results webpage every 24 hours: `Shellfish monitoring results - Cefas (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science)`_ .. _`shellfish classification | food standards agency`: https://www.food.gov.uk/business-guidance/shellfish-classification .. _`shellfish monitoring results - cefas (centre for environment, fisheries and aquaculture science)`: https://www.cefas.co.uk/data-and-publications/shellfish-classification-and-microbiological-monitoring/england-and-wales/shellfish-monitoring-results/

Data is obtained through sampling carried out by local authorities at designated monitoring points across England and Wales, generally on a monthly basis. Testing for *E.coli* is carried out by regional public health laboratories which are designated as being appropriate for Official Control analysis (these are generally UK Health Security Agency and Public Health Wales laboratories). Results are reported by the testing laboratories to Cefas for collation and recommendation of classification status as described above.
