Abstract

The council, together with Scottish Natural Heritage have commissioned Consultant Landscape Architects to update the Argyll and Bute Landscape Wind Energy Capacity Study 2012. The study provides technical information which will be used to help the Council assess applications for wind energy developments and inform the development of the windfarm/wind turbine policies in the proposed Local Development Plan (LDP). Lineage

The study has used the landscape character types identified in Landscape assessment of Argyll and the Firth of Clyde (1996) undertaken by Environmental Resources Management for SNH, as the basis for assessment. However, this study was reviewed and some revisions made to landscape character types and their classification for the purposes of the 2012 and 2017 studies. Separate assessments have also been carried out for the National Scenic Areas. In addition, the 2017 study assesses sensitivity to turbines >130 metres and also considers scope for repowering existing windfarms with larger turbines guidance is also provided on the on the siting of smaller scale (up to 50 metre) turbines throughout Argyll and Bute.
