1981 - 1981 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) 1981 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series
A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out during 1981. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded. A summary table is included for cruises 02/81 and 03/81 containing catch data for all other species.

Three cruises were carried out in 1981: - **Silver Star 01/81 (14th March - 03rd April)** Work commenced on the 14th March off the Welsh coast (Conwy) briefly stopping when southerly gales prevented work on the 15th, all stations were completed by the 20th. Standard trawling stations were worked in the Liverpool Bay on the 29th March, and a further two were carried out en route to Douglas, 12 more stations were then completed in this area over the period 31st March to 2nd April. 34 one-hour trawls were carried out in total, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 364 plaice, 194 whiting, 179 cod, 18 sole, 8 lemon sole, 9 brill. - **Silver Star 02/81 (11th June - 19th June)** Trawling commenced on 11th June off the Welsh coast (Conwy) and continued through to the 13th until strong north west winds kept the vessel in port. Further trawls were carried out on the 14th, until the wind increased again and halted work on the 15th. On 18th June the vessel travelled to the Liverpool Bay area, where all remaining trawls were completed by the end of the 19th. 20 one-hour trawls were carried out in total, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 282 plaice, 133 whiting, 38 cod, 7 sole. - **Silver Star 03/81 (19th October - 31st October)** Strong north westerly winds prevented work until the 22nd, after which the survey commenced for ten days, however three of those were lost to unsettled weather conditions. Towards the end of the period later tides restricted the amount of daylight working hours available, and extra time had to be used. 20 one-hour hauls were successfully completed, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 277 plaice, 153 whiting, 86 cod, 57 sole.
