Smoke Control Zones
Smoke Control Orders came into operation pursuant to the Clean Air Act 1956 (both The Clean Air Acts of 1956 and 1968 were replaced by the Clean Air Act 1993). It is an offence for an occupier of premises within a smoke control area to allow smoke emission from a chimney unless the smoke is caused by the use of an “authorised fuel”. Appliances which may be used in a smoke control area are defined in Smoke Control (exempted Fireplaces) Orders. These conditionally exempt the emission of smoke from chimneys serving the various fireplaces.
