This survey was undertaken by Cefas as part of the Western English Channel
Groundfish Survey using Charter Vessels Bogey 1 and Carhelmar, Qtr 4 (FSS:
CARHELMAR);
This survey series ran from 1984 to 2013. The aim was to provide fisheries
independent abundance indices of all age groups of sole and plaice which are
used in assessment working groups to tune the ICES stock assessment and to
estimate recruitment. The survey was undertaken annually. Fifty eight trawl
stations on the main sole grounds in the English waters of the Western English
Channel were fished and sampled. Surveys were carried out on chartered
commercial fishing vessels with Cefas staff on board.
Survey took place between 10/10/2012 and 16/10/2012 on Carhelmar
Equipment used during this survey :
- Beam Trawl 4m steel commercial 3/5 link mat flip up 75mm CE 40mm liner
PORT
- Beam Trawl 4m steel commercial 3/5 link mat flip up 75mm CE 40mm liner
STAR
Survey operations were undertaken on 58 stations
109 different species were caught on this survey

A number of changes to the survey grid, sampling procedure and gear have
occurred over time and these are documented by Cefas. Data were originally
collected and stored in spreadsheets. All Carhelmar data is stored on the
Fishing Survey System (FSS). Biological were samples returned to the
laboratory fro processing and age determination as required. Data has been
extensively quality checked.
When the survey was undertaken by the Carhelmar (survey reference prefixed as
CHMR) the catch was processed separately by port and starboard beam, but on a
few occasions a catch only from the one side was processed. In 2002 and 2004
the survey was undertaken on the Corystes research vessel, (survey reference
prefixed as CORY) but only the one beam was used, however this was rigged with
the same gear previously used by the Carhelmar. In 2003 both vessels were
used. When the survey was conducted on the Carhelmar, the processing of the
catch focused on the commercial species. All commercial fish species were
measured. Non-commercial species were not always identified and measured.
Benthic observations were made in some of the years from the port side beam.
Biological age data were collected for sole and plaice.
