DPLUS0045 Anguilla Satellite Derived Bathymetry 2m
Satellite derived bathymetry data created as part of the Darwin Plus funded project "Mapping Anguilla’s ‘Blue Belt’ Ecosystem Services". The project develops local capacity to undertake comprehensive marine resource assessments of Anguilla’s ‘Blue-Belt’, delivering best practice guidance for combining satellite and acoustic surveys, to extend mapping into deeper waters for the first time.

Satellite derived bathymetry (SDB) works by creating a relative depth map from the difference in the attenuation of blue and green wavelength light through water. As green light attenuates faster than blue the ratio between the two is used to calculate the relative depth. The relative depths are then tied to real depths (from the MBES survey) to create a bathymetry map. Data from the Pleiades 1A sensor was purchased for Anguilla at a resolution of 2m by 2 m. The pre-processing and processing of the data was undertaken by Environment Systems and Newcastle University. After the data had been standardised the bathymetry was derived using a method developed by Stumpf* et al.* (2003)[1] utilising the ratio between the differences in the attenuation of green and blue light. The map was then depth corrected to points taken from the MBES data collected as part of this project and from point depth samples collected around the island during a separate survey.
